This page provides information about the light parameters in the Details tab.

Overview

When a light is selected, its parameters are displayed in the Details tab in the right-hand side panel. A light can be selected either from the Lights tab, or from the Lights filter tab of the Objects tab.

Create a Light

You can create lights in Envision either from the Create menu or from the Toolbar.

To create a light from the Create menu:

  • Click Create in the top menu bar, then select the type of light you want to create.
  • Click in the viewport and drag the mouse while holding the right mouse button down.

To create a light from the Toolbar:

  • Click the arrow next to the Create light toolbar button to display a menu of available lights for creation.
  • Select the type of light you want to create.
  • Click in the viewport and drag the mouse while holding the right mouse button down.

Find an Existing Light

Once a light is created, you can find it in the Objects tab under the Lights filter, as well as in the Lights tab. In the Lights tab, you can also filter lights by type.

Both tabs provide buttons and menus for additional filtering and light-related actions. You can learn more about these features on the Light Tab page and the Objects Tab page.

Change Light Properties

All light properties are located in the Details panel upon light selection. Most of the properties are common for all light types but there are a couple of properties available only for particular types of light. Light presets are also available for quick light setup. For more information about the light properties, see Light Types.

Actions with Lights

All light types share a set of common options, along with some options that are specific to each respective light type.

Buttons

A field showing the name of the selected light, allowing you to also rename the light. The new name is automatically displayed in the respective light filter tab.

Lock – Disables the transformation options (position, rotation and scale) of the selected light(s). The options become greyed out. Click to enable the options for manipulation again.

Toggles the visibility of the selected light on and off. Invisible lights are not rendered.

Move pivot – Opens the Pivot Point Adjustments options. There you can move the pivot point.

Select hierarchy All – Selects the parent and all children of the current selection from within the scene hierarchy.

Select hierarchy Parent only – Selects only the parent of the current selection from within the scene hierarchy.

Select hierarchy All children – Selects the rest of the children in the scene hierarchy group the current selection belongs to.

Make instance unique – Excludes the selection from the rest of its instances and makes it unique. The action is disabled if the selection has no instances.

Select all instances – Selects all instances the selected light has in the scene.

Land to surface – Moves the selected light downwards (along the Z axis) until its bounding box collides with the first object below it.

Hide light source – Hides the visible light emitter from view and through glass and transparent materials, while keeping the lighting effect unchanged. Click to show the light emitter again.

Move along path – Associates the selected light with a path to define its direction of movement

Move along path settings – Opens the Move along path settings. Available when the Move along path button is activated and a path is selected.

Look at – Picks an object the selected light should look at during animation.

Replace with – Replaces the selected light with a new one from the Asset Library. You can replace either the current instance of the selected light or all instances of the light. Find more information on the Objects Tab page.

Restores all position, rotation and scale values to their default values, i.e to zero.

Transformations

World coordinates – When enabled, light transformations are done using world coordinates, i.e. the global scene axes. When disabled, transformations are done using local coordinates, i.e. light’s own axes.

Position – Moves the light along the X, Y and Z axes.

Rotation – Rotates the light along the X, Y and Z axes.

Scale – Specifies the scale along the X, Y and Z axes.

Pivot Point Adjustments

Moves the pivot to the bottom center of the bounding box.

Moves the pivot to the bottom center of the bounding box.

Moves the pivot to the center of the bounding box.

Moves the pivot to the top of the bounding box.

Resets the pivot to its initial position.

Minimum bounding box value on X / Y / Z axis.

Center bounding box value on X / Y / Z axis.

Maximum bounding box value on X / Y / Z axis.

Local Coordinates – Uses the local coordinate when adjusting the pivot point. The local coordinate system is specific to each individual object. The X, Y, and Z axes are aligned relative to the object's transformation.

World Coordinates – Uses the world coordinate when adjusting the pivot. The world coordinate system is the global reference frame for the entire scene. The X, Y, and Z axes are always aligned with the scene’s global orientation.

X – Displays and specifies the selected pivot's position on the X axis. The value is World or Local coordinate space dependent.

Y – Displays and specifies the selected pivot's position on the Y axis. The value is World or Local coordinate space dependent.

Z – Displays and specifies the selected pivot's position on the Z axis. The value is World or Local coordinate space dependent.

Move Along Path

Speed – Specifies the speed of the light while moving along the path.

Offset – Specifies the light's forward offset from the starting point of the path, measured in scene units. Useful e.g. for making the animation start from the middle of the path.

Animation – Specifies the behavior of the animation after being played. It can loop, stop, hide, or extrapolate.

Follow Path – When enabled, the light aligns with the centerline of the path, automatically following its path and maintaining the same direction as the path.

Examples

The following examples demonstrate the effect that individual Light parameters have on the project. Click on any image to view it at a higher resolution.

Example: Hide Light Source

This examples shows the effect of the Hide light source tool. The Hide light source tool hides the light emitter from view, including through glass and transparent materials. The light emitter isn't rendered, but its lighting effect remains active in the project. When the Hide light source tool is disabled, the light source is visible.
