SketchUp and LayOut

New Unified Interface

What We Did

SketchUp and LayOut now share one interface on Windows and macOS, with the same customisable workspace, toolbars and interface options around the modelling window.

The Details

SketchUp has long worked the same way on macOS and Windows, but the two interfaces looked very different. That made switching operating systems, or working with someone on the other platform, harder than it needed to be. SketchUp 2027.0 brings the desktop interfaces together, so SketchUp and LayOut look and behave the same on Windows and macOS.

The unified interface is based on the Windows version of SketchUp. Mac users now get features Windows users have had for some time, including:

  • Dockable toolbars
  • Dockable trays that hold multiple panels
  • A revised Materials interface and library

On both Windows and macOS, SketchUp now has a dockable Ruby Console and updated toolbar styling.

Multiple Document Management

What We Did

You can now open and edit several models or documents in one instance of SketchUp or LayOut, using tabs and floating model windows.

The Details

Working on two or more models at once used to be awkward. The old workarounds could be inefficient, use a lot of system resources or simply get in the way. In SketchUp 2027.0 you can open and edit several models or documents in one instance of SketchUp or LayOut using these features:

  • Model and Document Tabs - Open models and documents now appear as tabs in a new section, one tab per file. Hover over a tab to see a preview of that file. In SketchUp, the tabs sit just above the Scene tabs. Opening a new or existing file from the File menu opens it in a new tab, and you can also click Create a new model (the + icon) on the Tab bar to start a new file.
  • Tab Customization - You can rearrange the order of open tabs on the Tab bar.
  • Floating Model Windows - Drag a tab off the dock, or double-click a docked tab, to open it in a separate modelling window that you can place anywhere, including on a second display. Toolbars and panels stay in your main workspace but still work on the model or document in the floating window. To return the window to a tab, drag it back or double-click its name.
  • A Persistent App Window - Closing all open tabs no longer closes the application. In SketchUp, the Welcome Window appears so you can open a new or recent model. In LayOut, you can open a new or recent file from the File menu.
  • Updated Scene Tabs - Scene tabs have been updated to work alongside the new Model Tab bar:
    • Add a new scene by clicking Create a new Scene.
    • In each model's tab, click the dropdown to show or hide Scene tabs.
    • Hover over a scene tab to see a preview of that scene.

Hidden Line Performance Enhancements

What We Did

An improved Hidden Line Rendering (HLR) engine greatly reduces the time needed to generate vector linework for complex models, while keeping or improving drawing fidelity.

The Details

Rebuilding HLR is a major step towards better performance in both SketchUp and LayOut. SketchUp 2027.0 introduces a new HLR rendering engine that cuts the time needed to generate vector linework while keeping or improving drawing fidelity in complex models.

The new engine is a SketchUp Public Labs feature and is turned on by default in the Performance section of Preferences in LayOut, or the Graphics section in SketchUp. If you have problems with the new engine, you can switch back to the classic rendering engine.

For more information about this option, see Graphics (SketchUp) or Performance (LayOut).

Intel-based Mac End of Support

What We Did

Apple is ending support for future macOS versions on Intel-based Macs, so SketchUp 2027.0 requires Apple silicon.

The Details

In 2020, Apple announced its move from Intel processors to Apple silicon in Mac computers. To keep SketchUp's performance standards high and focus development on modern hardware, SketchUp 2027.0 is only available for Macs with Apple silicon.

For current hardware and operating system requirements, see SketchUp system requirements.

Interoperability Improvements

What We Did

SketchUp 2027.0 adds more controls for DWG and DXF imports and exports, advanced IFC workflows with CRS-aware exports, closer parity between TrimBIM and IFC, and USD enhancements.

The Details

DWG and DXF imports and exports have these improvements:

  • Tessellation Import Options - DWG and DXF import options now include a Tessellation Quality section, giving you more control over the level of mesh detail in the imported file. Choose a preset, or customise these settings:
    • Angular Deviation - Controls how smoothly curved surfaces are rendered. Lower angles give fine, smooth arcs with more triangles; higher angles give blockier, lower-poly geometry.
    • Chordal Tolerance - Sets the maximum distance allowed between the triangulated mesh and the original CAD surface. A smaller tolerance reproduces the surface precisely; a larger one gives a rougher mesh and faster processing.
    • Max Edge Length - Sets a hard limit on the length of any mesh triangle edge. Lower values add mesh detail across large flat areas; higher values avoid unnecessary faces.
  • Annotation Controls - DWG and DXF import options now include an Annotation section that sets how imported text, dimensions and hatch patterns are handled. Each category has its own options:
    • Text: Contours Only, Filled Meshes, Native SketchUp Text or None.
    • Dimensions: Contours Only or Native SketchUp Dimensions.
    • Hatch: Linework or None.
  • Import Metadata - The Import Metadata option is now available when importing DWG or DXF files. When it is turned on, SketchUp organises the data to support downstream workflows:
    • Each imported element becomes a SketchUp component.
    • Each block metadata element is classified as IfcAnnotation using the IFC4 standard.
    • Standard geometry elements keep their standard IFC classification.
    • The IfcAnnotation's ObjectType receives the name of the original .dwg or .dxf entity, with an ObjectType of "Polyline".
    • .dwg and .dxf block components receive a property set named CAD_Metadata, which holds the relevant metadata attributes from your original file.
  • 3D Export Optimization - DWG and DXF exports now include a Geometry section where you choose the mesh type you need:
    • Smooth (SubD) - A subdivision surface mesh format suited to organic shapes and to workflows that use subdivision-aware renderers. It only works with AutoCAD versions after 2010.
    • Flat-faceted (Polyface) - A standard faceted mesh format suited to direct polygon editing.

IFC and TrimBIM have these improvements:

  • Expanded Geometry Support - Import now supports SweptDiskSolid geometry, so reinforcement elements such as IfcReinforcingBar and IfcReinforcingMesh appear correctly in the viewport and Outliner. Export now supports the IfcLamp and IfcOutlet classes, keeping their geometry and attributes.
  • Advanced Tag & Layer Importing - A new Tags dropdown menu in the Preferences section of the import dialog lets you choose Use IFC Classes (the default), Use IFC Layers or Don't create Tags when importing.
  • TrimBIM files match IFC files - The TrimBIM importer and exporter have been updated to match the features of SketchUp's IFC tools.
  • Coordinate Reference System export metadata - When a model is geolocated with a Coordinate Reference System (CRS), SketchUp now includes its CRS and positioning information automatically when you export to IFC. This keeps the model's real-world position and orientation when you coordinate it in other applications, so you are less likely to need to reposition exported models by hand. SketchUp writes this information with standard IFC entities:
    • IfcProjectedCRS - Defines the coordinate reference system the model uses, including its CRS identification, description and coordinate-system units.
    • IfcMapConversion - Defines how the SketchUp model is positioned within that CRS, including Eastings, Northings, Orthogonal Height, X-axis orientation and scale.

USD support now covers the USD, USDA and USDC file extensions as well as USDZ. Export has these new options:

  • Feature Level - Choose how the exported data is structured for the application you are sending it to.
    • Normal exports the model for viewing and rendering in other applications.
    • Round Trip suits data you plan to bring back into SketchUp later. Files are larger and slower to export.
  • Texture Level - Control how materials are handled in the export.
    • Normal exports textures as they are.
    • Baked bakes material effects into new textures for better fidelity. Files are larger and slower to export.

On import, you can choose the file's Up Axis (Auto, Y-Axis or Z-Axis), its Units, and the Edge visibility (Auto, visible or hidden).

SketchUp Procedures

What We Did

SketchUp Procedures make familiar workflows more powerful through Procedural Tools. Follow Me, a selection of Solid Tools and the new Copy Along tool create native, non-destructive Procedural Components that are easy to edit.

The Details

SketchUp Procedures build on existing SketchUp workflows through Procedural Tools. Geometry you create or edit with these tools becomes a non-destructive Procedural Component. You can edit, nest and reuse these components in the same way as any other SketchUp component.

SketchUp 2027.0 adds a new Procedure toolbar with these tools:

  • Copy Along - The new Copy Along tool duplicates groups or components along a path with adjustable spacing. The path, the copies and the parameters stay fully editable at all times.
  • Follow Me - The upgraded Follow Me tool now supports multiple extrusion profiles inside groups or components, and keeps existing materials and attributes.
  • Solid Tools - The Solid Tools now work with Procedural Components. Improvements include:
    • Support for multiple solid objects through Solid Collections: standard groups or components that contain only nested solids. Additional Solid Collections need no extra setup.
    • The original target hierarchy can be kept.
    • Tags, classifications and metadata are kept wherever possible.

Controls for Procedural Tools appear in Entity Info. A new context menu option, Explode to Inputs, removes the procedural component but leaves the geometry in the model.

More Procedures are being developed for future releases.

Section Fill Hatches

What We Did

Section Fill Hatch Patterns are now available to show solid objects diagrammatically. You manage these fills and patterns in the new Hatch Patterns panel, Entity Info, Materials or the Styles panel.

The Details

Section fills show the inside of a solid object when it is cut by a section plane. SketchUp 2027.0 lets you add Hatch Patterns to section fills. A Hatch Pattern is a set of adjustable vector lines combined with a background colour or a tileable raster image.

Use the new Hatch Patterns panel to view, import, create and manage the hatches in your model. SketchUp includes a default library of standard Hatch Patterns in the .skh file format. To add your own, import an .skh file, an image or a .PAT file. SketchUp imports only one pattern per .PAT file, so if a .PAT file contains several patterns you need to import each one separately.

You can also set a section fill Hatch Pattern in the Materials panel or in Entity Info, in the same way you add a texture map. When you edit a material, a Section Fill option is now available.

Click the Section Fill swatch to open the Choose Section Fill window, where you link a hatch pattern to a material. When a section plane cuts a solid group or component painted with that material, the linked hatch pattern appears in the cut. Painting individual faces does not change the section fill, but it can override the material painted on a component or group. We recommend leaving the default material on faces and painting whole components or groups, with one material per component.

You can also set a section fill on a group or component independently of its material. This overrides any material-linked section fill on that group or component. In Entity Info, click the section fill swatch under the material swatch to set an independent section fill hatch.

Section fills can also be set and changed in the Styles panel with the Section Fill option. Turning this option off hides all section fills, including vector patterns.

The new Override Section Fill by Style option, just below the existing controls, works like this:

  • When it is on, SketchUp uses one uniform fill set in the Styles panel, the same as "classic section fills".
  • When it is off, SketchUp shows the per-object and material-linked section fill hatches.

If a group or component has no hatch assigned, it uses the section fill from the current style.

AutoFit Live Components

What We Did

AutoFit is a new interactive placement method that configures a Live Component automatically when you drag and drop it onto a face in your model.

The Details

AutoFit for Live Components bridges early massing and detailed design, making configurable modelling faster and simpler. AutoFit includes:

  • Drag-and-drop placement - Place AutoFit Live Components onto faces in your model. While you move a component, the face under the cursor is highlighted to preview where the component will go.
  • Automatic configuration - When you drop a component onto an existing face, it adjusts its size and shape to fit straight away.
  • Fit to any flat face - You can attach a component to faces inside other components or groups without opening, editing or exploding them.
  • On-the-fly orientation - Adjust origin points and alignment directions (such as deck board angles or tile patterns) during placement to orient the parametric geometry correctly.

Learn More

For more information on using AutoFit Live Components, see SketchUp Live Components.

Outliner Sort

What We Did

New sort options in Outliner let you organise component instances by tag as well as by the usual model hierarchy.

The Details

Outliner now has a Sort By field. Choose Hierarchy, the default, or Tags. Sorting by Tags shows the objects in your model grouped by the tags applied to their component instances.

Sorting by tags still works when IFC Classifications are used. Classified components are sorted under their definitions, and tagged objects are grouped under their tags. Components with no classification or tag are listed as Untagged or Unclassified.

For more information, see Organizing a Model.

Touchpad Support

What We Did

Touchpad support on both Windows and macOS is improved with additional keyboard modifiers.

The Details

SketchUp has supported touchpads on macOS for some time. SketchUp 2027 brings the same functionality to Windows and improves it on both platforms.

With touchpad controls, you use a one-finger gesture on the trackpad while holding a keyboard modifier:

  • Orbit - Control+Alt (CMD on macOS)
  • Pan - Shift+Control+Alt (CMD on macOS)

For more information, see Navigating the SketchUp Interface.

Coordinate Reference Systems

What We Did

Add Location now supports Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS), so you can geolocate a SketchUp model accurately using your project's coordinate system and project coordinates.

The Details

A Coordinate Reference System gives a standardised way to describe real-world positions using project coordinates. CRS helps align survey, civil engineering, GIS and architectural data precisely across different software.

When you geolocate a model with Add Location, selecting Coordinate Reference System opens a window where you import your CRS or calibration file. You can then set the exact Project Base Point using Easting and Northing values.

Once a CRS file is loaded, Add Location calculates elevation data automatically, and you can still adjust the Project Base Point altitude by hand. SketchUp uses these settings to orient and align your geometry, adjusting for True North automatically. This means you can model near the internal origin and still keep the real-world geographic context.

For more information, see Geolocating with Add Location.

LayOut

Image Adjustments in SketchUp Viewports

What We Did

LayOut now has Image Adjustments controls for viewports, so you can fine-tune raster or hybrid renders and image files without an external editor.

The Details

The new Image Adjustments panel has several non-destructive controls for fine-tuning images in your document:

  • Opacity - Adjust the transparency of images or SketchUp model viewports.
  • Brightness & Contrast - Correct exposure problems or strengthen the visual impact of site photos and renders.
  • Hue & Saturation - Fine-tune colour balance, or fully desaturate images for greyscale documentation.
  • Reset Controls - Undo changes with a reset button for each setting, or use "Reset All" to return to the original image.

Paperless Drawing

What We Did

The new Draw Mode for Scaled Drawings gives you a paperless canvas in LayOut, so you can focus on design and drafting rather than page management.

The Details

The Scaled Drawing panel has a new Enter Draw Mode option. Click Enter Draw Mode to start a paperless session.

The canvas shows red and green axis lines starting at 0,0, the same as the SketchUp modelling environment. You draw at full 1:1 scale using real-world coordinates, and you can change the paper colour and grid settings.

When you click Exit Draw Mode in the Scaled Drawing panel, LayOut converts your work into a group at 1/4" = 1' for imperial or 1:50 mm for metric. You can change this scale before entering Draw Mode or after leaving it.

Selecting a SketchUp model viewport fills in the scale of the Scaled Drawing context for you, which speeds up detailing over the SketchUp model. Hide and Fade are also available in the Scaled Drawing panel for more control over your drawing.

  • Fixed UI::HtmlDialog#set_can_close block behaviour on later close attempts.
  • Fixed Sketchup::ComponentDefinition#save_copy so it keeps the original definition GUIDs.
  • Fixed Sketchup::InstancePath#valid? reporting for leaf-only paths that point at nested vertices.
  • Sketchup::ShadowInfo#[]= now issues a warning instead of raising an error for read-only keys.
  • Fixed double-transformation positioning errors when attaching linear dimensions to construction lines inside groups or components.
  • Fixed cross-model notification leaks in DefinitionsObserver, EnvironmentsObserver, ModelObserver#onPidChanged and MaterialsObserver#onMaterialSetCurrent when several documents are open.
  • Adjusted the firing order of Sketchup::AppObserver#onActivateModel during model teardown.
  • (macOS) Fixed a crash when quitting SketchUp while printing to the Ruby Console.
